Does it take away from a player's legacy if he plays for more than one team during his career?

I think there's something to be said for a player to stay with one team his whole career. I'm not a big fan of guys like Gary Payton and Karl Malone who spend their last couple years trying to get on a championship squad, especially if they're now reduced to role players. Does a championship really validate a career? Will guys like Glen Rice and Michael Finley (should the Spurs win this year) now be considered winners just cuz they were on the roster of a winning team?

I think guys like Reggie Miller and Stockton leave a better legacy than those franchise hoppers... do you agree?
 
If they force the trade for the reasons you state, then yes.

If their traded by mgmt and really have nothing to do with it then no.
 
This pertains more to hcokey, but Ray Borque played 20 years in Boston, but never won the stanley cup.

He was going to retire and he wanted to win the cup. He was traded to another team just so he could have that opportunity (and that doesn't take anything away from his legacy). The next year, he won the cup with Colorado.

He will not be remembered for winning the cup. Borque will always be a Bruin that got to go out on top.
 
I don't mind players changing teams but I agree w/ you that token championships at end of careers adds nothing in my book. No one remembers role players and that's what these former ring chasing stars are now. Winning a championship and ring is only one part. You have to be the superstar and the reason why your team wins.

Miller and Stockton definitely left better legacy in my eyes.
 
I can see why a player would want the championship though. For them at least it must be great knowing that you reached the top.
 
I hope LeBron plays his entire career in Cleveland because they have a great thing going now and with him as the leader they will be NBA champions eventually.

they wasted so much money on korver, dalembert, willie green...it pisses me off. AI and KG would be perfect cause KG would be the sidekick, in a sense that he would'nt need the ball all the time. KG commands so much defense in the post that AI will be able to finish at the rim even more than usual. Rebounding would be much better and there would be some sort of interior defense(dalembert tries to swat everything and goaltends more than he blocks)

I'm going to write a letter to the governer to make this happen.


also, webber is getting paid slightly more than they would have to give KG. so they're already paying out of the ass for a crappy team.
 
No i don't think it hurts them depending on the circumstances. Charles Barkely got outta philly, but he carried philly and phoenix and made good contributions in houston and is still regarded as a great competitor. If your organization isn't doing what's necessary to help build a winning team around you, then it's in the best player's interests to get out. Same can't be said though for when VC admitted not giving it his all last year in toronto.
 
I think that it shows how versatile players are if they can play for more than one team, more than one coach, and under entirely different setups.
