Hi,
I understand for alot of us that overclocking is a hobby.. but for others that just want a faster pc for cheap, does it really make sense?
Think about, by the time you spend extra money for a larger case, extra fans, and an expensive cpu cooler, you could have probably bought a 100mhz(or even more) faster cpu.

First off, for most of us it is a hobby. I view it much like modifying cars, except that it's cheaper & it doesn't kill you when you mess up.

As far as the cost, you can definitely save some money. I don't need all the stuff I have in my SC760A case to get my CII to 952. Just the Golden Orb & Arctic paste. $30 worth of cooling, & it's at 952. And whenever I decide to go get a FCPGA Coppermine? I can re-use it all.

I went from a C366 to a P3 500 for nothing.(buy/sell deal) Now I'm going to a C2 566/850 or maybe 952 and getting paid for it. I got the C2566 for $83 to my door. I have the P3 500 sold for $125. I still have the same case I used for my AMD300 about 2 years ago. I did modify the case by replacing the case cover with a polished/brushed finish stainless steel cover. Tears well up in my eyes everytime I look at it. Its beautifull. Fans are cheap especially when you get them for free with another order like my Golden Orb.

Sooo, the only thing that makes since to me IS overclocking. I wouldn't go from a P3 500 to a C2 566 unless I could overclock it. The P3 500 wasn't that overclockable it was just a free upgrade. I actually make $40 from going to the 566 and overclocking. Who wouldn't do that?

The fact is, that plenty of people are running 33-50% overclocks with NO extra cooling or fancy cases at all. For example the coppermine 500, 550, 600, 650 and 700s. All great chips that overclock very well indeed...

For most of us overclocking is more then a hobby
It is a way of life.
We would do anything to get this sucker as fast as possible.
Anything that is not overclocked, we will overclock it until
satisfied.
Why run at a boring speed of 500mhz when you can
run at 550mhz get that performance, and if it stable and a little
hotter, heck why not?
Same goes with Cyrix MII
Overclock any of them, heck their over rated PR give you
every reason to.
Fry it if you have to hehe
It ain't worth much anyway know what I mean.
Once you gotten into overclocking, its an addiction and it cannot
stop.
One rule is alway up the voltage when overclocking cause it need
more power to go faster.

Extra cost? I have no where spent near the money to pay for a 1ghz P3(i have a 650 o/c to 975).

Lets see, i have a PEP66, which I spent $24. I have 8 total case fans which totalled $45. I have an inexpensive Enlight 7237 Case($34, no P.S.) So i have spent maybe a $100 to get my system an extra 325mhz. Its well worth the money. Plus, half the stuff I have was carried over from my last system, so the actual cost is a lot less.

Spends extra? Most CPUs overclock with out any additional $$$. I had a P3-500 that OCed to 575Mhz with no additional cooling other than the retail ran and heatsink. Saved about $100 over the next processor up. Took all of 15 seconds to accomplish. On the 5 600E systems I built they all OCed to 800Mhz with retail fan and heatsink.
