Does It Matter Which PCI-E Lane You Use For SLi or CF?

I got a ATX board that support SLi and CF and thinking about the possibly of adding another 290x in the future but since I got the Kraken G10 bracket it might be a tight fit on the top two PCI-E lane, so I was wondering if I can stick in the third lane?

By the nature of the Z87 PCI controller, it support up to 1x16, 2x8, 1x8/2x4, but it didn't specified which lane is required for the configuration of 2x8, so I assume that it doesn't really matter as long as I got two slot occupied. Yes?

It matters, you need to look in you motherboard manual and it will tell you which slots are what speed and under what conditions.
