Does it matter how many fans come from one wire?

So right now I have 3 fans all using the same 4 pin power thing. I'll try to explain each fan come with a male and female end so I put the power end into the first fan and then attached the second fan to the first and then the third to the second. Right now it looks like the fans are running a little sluggish. Is it because they are crapy generic fans or because I should you more power to them?

I'm no expert, but as far as I know, fans have relatively low draw, around 9-10V, so I'm pretty sure 3 would be able to run off that fine. It might just be your imagination that they're running slow. Who knows.

I plan on replacing them because they don't move air that great but a couple times when the computer starts up one of them fails to stat up.

The fans all run of the +12V rail, along with many other components of your computer. IF they weren't getting enough power, you would probably be experiencing intermittent problems with your HHD and optical drives. As long as they're on a molex connection, you could probably run a dozen of them like you have, before you stated experiencing problems.

If you have a spare molex connector, try putting some of them on it - see if that changes anything.

Hi, Typical fan draws about .130 Milliamps at 12Volts. That's not much of a load. Your fans should have no problems the way you are using them. Jim

Most fan controllers (of 4 fans) run off one molex, so you can definately do at least 4.

Remember, to move air you need to have the right combination of intakes and exhausts. If all fans are exhausting, obviously, there will be little air movement. Same is true if all are intakes. Always take the PSU fan into consideration that is an exhaust fan when determining the right combination.
