Does it make a difference if I plug the mouse into a ps2 port?

I'm testing out my new mx510 and I'm wondering if if there's a major difference in using usb over ps2. My computer only has 6 usb ports and I have a lot of gadgets.

Yea for large amounts of bandwidth but for fast response, you want to plug it into the PS/2 port when ever possible. The PS/2 port is much more responsive/less drivery than USB and is less likely to skip when there is a system spike in CPU utilization.

I've always used the ps/2 port until one day my mx510 started going CRAZY. It would spaz out and f up my sensitivity. I switched to usb and it works fine now.

I only use PS2 when doing things that aren't in Windows (excluding BIOS). Meaning, reinstalling Windows or reformatting, since the USB drivers don't work until after Windows is installed.

PS2 is alot better for gaming as it has a faster refresh rate which will mean a smother mouse action in gaming, you can actually OC the mouse response/refresh rate, but only on the PS2 i think .. some people say that you can not see a differnerce if the mouse is clocked higher than the screen refresh rate but i disagree ..

EDIT: just to add to that

standard

PS2 = 100Hz
USB = 125Hz

so standard the USB has a faster response rating.

But you can increase the PS2 Hz up to 200 Hz, where as if you are to change the USB hz higher so that you can have a faster reponse rate, you will up the Hz for the whole USB bus that the mouse is hosted on, and therefore corrupt data on the bus for other devices .. PS2 rules ...

just thought that i would add this poiuntless info :D

ive used my logitech mouse man dual optical and now my MX510 on the usb port. i remember the dual optical telling me something about the PS/2 port not being able to handle the 800dpi resolution of the mouse or something

either way this MX510 is a gem, mega responsive.

i still use the PS/2 for the keyboard though, since its guarranteed to work in the POST screens....and im not exactly bothered bout logitechs iTouch software either

USB allows a much greater sampling rate than PS/2. It will provide much smoother movement on larger screens, and usually within games.

I'm considering going over to a USB keyboard and mouse, because my existing system will occasionally beep if I press too many buttons at once...

U sure? I always heard PS2 was better for the mouse. I have a MX510 in my mouse port and pushed the refresh up to 200...i also use my keyboard on the keyboard plugin since I don't see the point of USB for a keyboard too much ;)

well i've heard it explained before that the ps2's higher refresh is nullified because of how primitive it is. bleh i don't remember explaination of course. uisb works fine
mx518 uses usb doesn't it..and its the best one out there:)

usb refresh can be "overclocked" to up to 1000hz, search google for the tool. fyi.. i wouldn't go over the 500hz clock because you could cause damage to the usb port.

i recommend always using usb, its more responsive. and for keyboards.. you can get away with hitting more keys at once. when my keyboard is plugged into ps2 and i play an FPS sometimes when i'm circle strafing and changing weapons one of the keys "locks" and 'im stuck moving in a certain direction until i jam on all the keys.. this type of thing never happens with usb.

I tried using my mx510 on PS/2, but it wouldn't work. Worked fine as soon as i plugged it into the USB though.

Overclocking your USB/PS2 port is pointless. If your mouse is refreshing faster than your screen refresh rate (which is usually around 75Hz) then it is pointless. With a screen refresh rate of 75Hz, a mouse running at 75Hz and a mouse running at 1000Hz will do EXACTLY the same thing.

Just though I would point that out b4 anyone posts "I got my USB mouse to 500Hz, and then my MoBo caught on fire". :)

yeah that is true .. not all mouses will OC to 1000Mhz .. but the logitech's do, like the one in question .. also like i stated before you will render the whole USB BUS useless as all data will be corrupted at that frequency .. anyways thats like a 90% OC, that would be worth sticking in my sig :p .. if i had one ..
