If I leave my current team which I joined in May of this year to go back to work on my old team under a different manager? It includes a promotion from entry level developer to mid level/senior, which I have not been doing any entry level work since I got on this new team.

My old manager had some of my old team mates to tell me he has a posting out there and that if I apply he won't even need to interview me, but he wants me to go through the process anyway. Same company, just would be going back to doing production support and development as opposed to just agile development.

I just don't want to look bad because I haven't had much time with my current manager, and they don't know what I'm doing half the time anyway. Only reason is it's a quick way to get promoted as opposed to waiting and hoping for a promotion and it would be closer to the turnpike from that area.

I'd do it. Who cares what others think. If you stop advancing at your current company, find a new company to work for.

Yeah it's not 100% guaranteed I was moved to a new team because they rotate people every 18 months for a certain time if you are new. I may have to wait 18 months but my buddy said if the system won't let me apply then I will know.

Hardest part would be telling my manager who is really nice why haha.

first things first: don't care what people think. There will be jealous people no matter what you do. If you are successful, you will have enemies.

I'm not really worried about jealousy. More like is it the proper thing to do or would it look bad ? My company is the type where you have to drink the kool aid to fit in.

i wouldnt do it under a year because i wouldnt want future employers to think i might bail on them after 6 mo or whatever it ends up being. its a little different within the same company but it could still give a bad impression

I've been at the company 2.5 years already.

If you're the right fit for the job, it can't be that bad for you to drop out of a rotation program to do the thing you're meant to do.

The door just opened for a promotion, take it. It might not happen again or you'll end up waiting and hoping.

like i said, its different within a single company. but if i were a team lead there, i would probably prefer to bring someone on that didn't have a history of leaving after 6 months.

you're leaving a bit too fast but on the other side you should take opportunities when they present themselves or you might lose the train.

Just clear up the 18 months thing, if you have to wait them out, you're worrying about nothing.

I agree that makes sense. If I had chose to be on the team I'm on now it would be different. But I was moved by the system without any input. They have a weird thing here where after 18 months if they don't see you have applied to another position at the same company they will just put you where they want.

I liked my old team a lot and I was very familiar with everything we did there. The team I'm on now is great but nothing I did in my last role remotely helps me here..even though I picked everything up really quickly and worked on this new project without a hitch. Even implemented a new design. People on my team were like wait your entry level, this project team is mostly senior and intermediate , why did they put you here?

I'll figure that out first. I mean the system won't even let you apply if it sees something off about your status. I see these upper level positions open within my department every month all you have to do is be able to apply. Difference with this one is, it's pretty much guaranteed if the posting manager is getting his employees to tell you to apply for it.

Just as an update: talked to my current manager about the old position I was working in. She mentioned that if I wanted to she would not stop me from posting to it. Said I've been doing excellent on the new team and am definately on track for a promotion. It's not a matter of if but when.

Also, my old manager gave me the highest ranks on my last review but just out development area on a skill that made no sense in the previous role I was working in. So my current manager called him to ask about what that was and she said he could not explain why he did that or what it meant. He also mentioned that he didn't feel right if she was trying to keep me on my new team if I wanted to go back.

So it came down to if you want the promotion right now go for it, apply and it's pretty much guaranteed since the old manager opened up that posting for me pretty much. Otherwise she will promote me after some more time on this team and again mentioned she's going to see what can be done to line up the timing of when to promote me. So it's no longer an if I will be promoted but when. Since I've only been in this new position 6 months , I like all the new code base I'm working on so I'll continue. A tech lead I've been working with is leaving to a new team soon and I've been shadowing him and working with him picking up what he knows. My current team members already ask me for help when he's not available so I guess now just wait for my review in December when they give out performance and bonus reviews.

And I think the deadline passed for that position by the time they talked.
