Would it hurt to have the zone alarm and norton internet security firewall running at the same time?

For maximum security, unplug the CAT-5 cable from your computer and pull the power plug from your wall. Now you're secure. Go outside and read a book.

lol

I'm not being paranoid, it's just that I am testing out the evaluation version of norton internet security, but don't want to take down my zonealarm, so I just want to know if it would hurt anything to run them together. So far it seems fine.

I'd say that both products hook into the operating system at a low level, hence the presence of one will affect the other in some way.

Of course, I may be totally wrong

It doesnt seem like they are affecting each other at all, beyond asking each other for permission to access the internet :p

Yes, the practice can be detrimental. A firewall apliance as the gateway and a software firewall on your pc and u will be fine tho.

It's not a very good idea. If you have a properly configured firewall, there should be no need for a second one. Not to mention the resources two firewall's would take up.

I've heard of and seen many people run software and hardware but never software and software.

Well for anyone that may care:

I've been running it for a day now with no ill consequences. Norton is picking up some tcp header attacks that zonealarm wasn't getting.

Are they both picking up the other things though? I would think that if one of them picked up an 'attack' and denied it, the other wouldn't see it since it would have already been dropped.

they should both pickup a outbound attempt to connect to the internet, but I would assume you are right for inbound blocked traffic.

Sure, but I can only assume that zonealarm wasnt detecting the scans... either that or it just wasnt alerting me of it which is very possible

the norton firewall has a neat tracker though that opens a java applet and pinpoints on a worldmap where scnas and attacks originate pretty cool
