Does Intel toolbox for 320 series SSDs have to be installed into windows, or bootable

Just wondering how I would go about initiating a Secure Erase of an Intel 320 SSD, if it is the only/primary HD in the system. Can you do it, and then the OS will hang because the disk disappears, or will it refuse to even secure erase if it detects it is the only disk in the system?
