what's the deal with these newer chipsets ?
Here is an example board in question
i have a P4 northwood laying around and want to pick up a cheap board and these seem to be common place
just wondering if it is safe to buy one of these
and if not is it a chipset incompatibility or merely bios related

thanks

Why buy a $145 motherboard for an obsolete chip ? just get a cheap $60-100 mobo that supports it.

that board is going for 47 bucks on newegg
and if it worked it would have ddr2 support and support for even better cpu's

Your link took me to an abit IL-90MV, and ht is $144.99 on newegg here

What board are you looking at ?

Do you want DDR or DDR2 orboth ?

Do you want AGP or PCI-express ?

I have two cheap boards I like, ECS P4M800 or P4M900, both use DDR or DDR2, but one is AGP and one PCI-express. I have owned both, and while they don't OC well, they are easy to setup, and dependable and cheap.

Well, sadly that mobo has no PCIe slot for video, only a 1x stub and 2x pci. Pointless if you do anything with graphics, even 720p/1080p quicktime/wmv stuff. Gaming is out of the question.

i just wanna run boinc on it
i want integrated graphics and possibly an integrated nic , either ddr1 or ddr2 is fine, and if possible a bios that would left me oc it
most everything else is non-important, i probably won't even leave a monitor connected to it after installing the os

The 945GT chipset is socket 479, for core duo, it doesn't support P4's at all. The Other board you linked to is socket 478 for P4's, it only shows support for Prescott cores on newegg, you would have to check the motherboard mfg's website for full CPU support, but I suspsect it will support a northwood since it has 400, 533 and 800mhz FSB. Also, there were 400, 533, and 800mhz FSB version of the northwood, some which had HT, so just saying it's a northwood doesn't say much..

some of the socket 479 chips actualy have 478 pins, there are differant configurations for the mobile chips, but they are not electricaly compatible with P4's even if they do have 478 pins.
