Does installing memory in different configurations affect performance?

I was wondering if installing different sized DIMMs affects performance on how you place the DIMMs. Say you had DIMM 1 with 128MB DIMM and DIMM 2 with a 256MB DIMM. Would that run better than if you had say DIMM 1 256MB and DIMM 2 128MB? I was wondering if there was any relation with using the smaller DIMM first since the chipset for memory doesn't have to search as large a DIMM and also the refresh doesn't take as long since the memory is smaller as well. I was just thinking since there may be a small performance gain and I think every bit matters.
