Does IE6 not normally see the transparency of a .png file?

I normally use Netscape 7.1 for all my browsing needs, but at work I have to use IE6. Well, I visited the site that I am working on at work the other day, and noticed a couple of pictures on the front page are not showing correctly. (See the first link in my sig for example) The pictures of the CD with music symbols and the movie clip have a dull grey box around them, although in Netscape, the transparancy that is there doesn't show like it's supposed to.

All of these little icons are .png.

Is it normal for IE6 to not show the transparancy effects on a .png file?

IE only supports transparency in PNG images when "simple transparency" (1-bit mask) is used. This is the same (crappy) type of transparency that GIF uses. Unfortunately IE< unlike most other browsers does not support the full 8 (or even 16) bit transparency that PNG files can use.

In short: IE blows so we can't use graphics with advanced transparency features on the web.

libpng.org has plenty of images available that will show you exactly what each browser does and does not support.

Ah, yes, reason #7362 why IE sucks. Here's a petition you can sign asking MS to support PNG alpha transparency, but with the next version of IE only being available to people who buy Longhorn (no free IE upgrades anymore, people!) it's a little bit of a moot point.
