Does IE have download resume?

JEDI

Lifer
i'm trying to dl a 100meg file, but it keeps freezing at certain points of the dl.

does IE have a dl resume feature? if so, how do i activate it?

if not, suggestions on resume?

No. IE doesn't has resume features.... get Firefox if you want to resume using a browser.

The alternative, and much preferred, approach is to use a download manager like DAP, Getright or Flashget (www.amazesoft.com) which can accelerate the download alongside resuming it if it disconnects.

You could get getright or flashget, or you could just get a better browser with features like that. Opera is the fastest and most secure browser out there, plus you won't need to download any plugins to make it do anything, it already does it all.

IE can resume, but it's pretty iffy.

It has AdBlock functionality now?

IE doesn't resume for me 90% of the time, don't know why.

Proxomitron works great for me and Opera (and IE and FF). Very customizable. BTW AdBlock isn't built-in to FF either. Both FF and Opera have popup blocking features though.

I don't know how well it works though. I just use a custom hosts file and Proxomitron for blocking ads.

But that's a plugin and Malak said it does everything out of the box, so that doesn't count.

Depends on your definition of a plugin. All it really is is a text file Opera will recognize on navigation events. Think of it like a HOSTS file for Opera with wildcards. That program he linked just makes it easier. So out of the box Opera actually has better ad-blocking utilities than FF does. There is no ad block list in FF like there is in Opera.

I was comparing it to FF, which isn't really any better than IE out of the box compared to Opera. Opera you don't need any plugins, whereas FF would require you to download dozens of plugins to get the same functionality. At the end of the day, it's quicker and safer to use Opera.

It is far more time consuming than installing the adblock plug in to firefox and i never could get it to work correctly, at least with opera 9 beta.

I heard a lot of things aren't working properly in the beta, which is why I haven't gotten it yet. Beta's tend to be like that though.

It sucks in Opera 8.5 too. Proxomitron is much better.

I wish they would write some plugins to remove things like those crap mail and irc clients.

Does Opera have anything like this: http://chrispederick.com/work/webdeveloper/ ?

Why would you want to remove the IRC or mail clients? It doesn't make it use up any more memory...

And that plugin looks like yet another one I can't seem to find a use for. About 99% of the plugins I see that Opera doesn't natively do, doesn't seem like anything real useful to 99% of users.

It's part of the executable, of course it does. That and it adds extra code paths that may or may have not been tested as well as the rest of the browser. The tight integration of IE and the Windows shell were the cause of a ton of it's past exploits, why would you want the Opera people to go down the same path by embedding everything possible into one executable?

As I said in another thread, just because you don't use it doesn't mean it's not useful. There are a lot of web developers out there and that toolbar makes it exceptionally easy to test their pages inside of FF. It seems odd that Opera wouldn't want to help out web developers since they need them for every one of their products.
