Offshoot from this thread. If not, why not? If so, why wouldn't it work on the mainland?

Dunno if it works or not.

But what works for Hawaii may not work for California and Georgia and etc. States have the right to implement state run health care and states are in a better position to respond to the needs of their citizens. The federal government is not.

Whether you agree or disagree with national healthcare, any rational person must admit what works in one region or one country will not work exactly the same in another region or country. Demographics, incomes, cultures are all different and this can effect the viability of such plans.

Did some reading on it tongiht. It still has problems.

If you dont have a job, you are still uninsured. Employer provided insurance is required for those working more than 20 hours a week. Insurance plans are heavily regulated.

Also the kid care plan put in place for those without insurance, exploded in cost as everyone(those that had their kids covered with insurance) moved their kids to the free govt plans.

There are lessons here to be learned.

It's Hawaii.

Once you accept paying $22 for a gallon of milk, you are trapped.

LOL... It's not that bad.

Basically, if you have a job you have insurance. If you can't land a job that gives you more than 20 hours/wk I don't know what to say...

It's not a bad system. It's hard on employers but since everyone has to participate the cost scale is somewhat manageable. The cost burden is put on the employer and those costs get passed on as a cost of doing business through retail pricing. It's not perfect but it works. It's better than just having the government in charge of it all.

Your "it's better than" statement is confusing to me. Are you implying that the health reform bills that have been passed by the House and Senate are "government in charge of it all"?? The major parts of both bills is employer and individual mandates similar to what we are talking about in Hawaii

Its pretty good. Like any system it has its problems. But it has far more positives than negatives.

How much immigration does Hawaii have?

It costs a lot of money to buy land in Hawaii. So to move there you either have to be filthy rich or inherit the land. Keep in mind that Hawaii receives a lot of its revenue from tourism.
