Does having a clean desk help you stay more focused?

I just finished cleaning up my computer space; MAN it's nice to have an organized desktop! Does having an organized desk area help you to stay more focused and think better? I find it helps me - I'm not so distracted with all the things pulling at my attention or the mess I know I should clean up.

i think it does to some degree. but entropy always takes over and eventually it gets cluttered again. i told myself i'd clean up my desk today...hasn't happened yet.

only when it gets to a point where...

a.) I cant find something
b.) there isn't enough room to "shove stuff off to the side of the desk" so that I can make a small 8.5"x11" space in the center.

I agree; it always gets messy so quickly after you clean it. There seems to be endless knick knacks that end up on your desk without a home no matter what you do...

Nothing helps me focus.
But usually I clean my room before I have to do work/revise becuase it's a way or productively putting off the bad stuff, so i can feel like I've done something worthwhile instead of just wasting time.

I just cleaned my desk now. It's totally empty except for a new wireless headset I'm about to install for someone in the office.

it does help u focus because if you were busy you wouldn't have time to clean your desk. Not busy = more free time = time to focus on individual problems as they arise 🙂.

i bet all you people have to go on OCD house cleaning frenzies at 3 AM when you're feeling stressed, too. for some people, a messy space = a messy mind and vise versa.

it helps me focus sometimes, but only to a point. If the desktop is too clean i'm bothered by the empty space. If there are nicely organized papers populating the desktop I'm fine with it.

Well, my concentration doesn't necessarily focus on the cleanliness of my desk, but I definitely can't stand having a terribly messy desk, office, etc.
