I will have to go sniff some...

But I would look to see what family that spice belongs to, and also see if it is properly dried.

I believe that Turpentine is a pine distilate, isn't it?

Yep:

So if nutmeg is also a pine seed, or something similar, grinding it while it is still wet/fresh may have trace amounts of similar substances.

It may also be that can of Turpentine you leave open on the counter to keep the flies away while you are grinding, but who am I to say....

If you google nutmeg and turpentine you get a reference to California Nutmeg

Definition:

[noun] California evergreen having a fruit resembling a nutmeg but with a strong turpentine flavor
Synonyms: California nutmeg, nutmeg-yew, Torreya californica

Possibility?

Hey you're right! Thanks. i knew I wasn't just imagining that smell or that I was just a chemical oddity.

Dipentene is a terpene liquid found in various volatile oils such as cardamon, mace, nutmeg , turpentine oil. This term is also reffered to the racemic mixture of limonene. Dipentene is used as a solvent for resins, alkyds and waxes and to make paints, enamels, lacquers and polishes. It is used as a perfumery composition for soaps, personal care products and cosmetics. It is used as an intermediate for terpene resins, carvone, terylene, and rubber chemicals. It is used as an oils dispersant, metal dryer. It is used as a substitute for chlorinated solvents in degreasing metals for cleaning in the electronic industry and the printing industry. alpha-Limonene has been used as a gallstone solubilizer in pharmaceutical industry.

YES! I have thought this for a long time. Someone bought me a jar of whole nutmeg and a microplane to grate it. I kept thinking it must have gone bad or something ... then I opened a jar of ground nutmeg and it was the same weird smell. I kept thinking it smelled like cleaning products, but you are right... turpentine!
