Does GPU overclock with no voltage bump increase watt usage?

It makes the CPU (or GPU or whatever you're posting about) draw more current which increases power usage.

Yes it will. Power consumption is linear to the clock speed and increases to the square of voltage. So while voltage might increase it more it isn't the only thing that increases power consumption.
 
That is real eye opener but by how much would it effect it by if that is the case. How many more watts would 50 mhz add onto a hd7770
 
If the stock speed is 1GHz, then going to 1.05GHz would yield a 5% increase in wattage so about 4-5 watts.

It is a positive feedback loop which will raise the temperature which raises resistance which increases power usage even more (which raises temperature, etc)!

(but for small increases, yeah, your explanation is close enough).
 
Would a 550 watt psu with 528 usable handle a fx6300 and a hd7770 crossfire (391watts) and both card reasonable overclocked?

I would say yes it could handle that load. If it is unable to do so it will just shut down before some damage occurs (most modern PSUs have OCP). How OCP works you can read here.
 
Yes that is the one i will be getting. So if something does gl wrong wive having not enouh power will this prevent damage?
 
I don't think you could overload a 550W PSU with a fx6300 and 7770 even if you tried. If you did, yes it would just shut down the entire computer.

OCP protects the PSU from frying itself. That's about it.
 
Those calculators estimate high. The TDP of the FX6300 is 95W. 7770 has a TDP of 80W. That's 175W... even if you overclock it, it won't be anywhere near 391W (the rest of the system pales in comparison to the CPU/GPU usage).
