Does Google Maps 7.x no longer suck

I've held off on updating my Maps to the latest overhaul, after all the negative noise it made and all kinds of features being disabled from the previous version.

Did Google address those issues? Is it finally a safe time to upgrade Maps? Anything I should be aware of still?

The navigation is fine, but I don't even try to use it to see what food and drink options are nearby anymore. The corpse of the platform-defining killer app formerly known as Local... is still dead.

  • Pain in the ass to get a list of results like Yelp. I end up using Yelp if I want to see the CVS nearby me for example.
  • The lack of the old My Maps feature is stupid. Google Maps engine is terrible at searching.
  • No navigation between 2 pin drops.
  • Still not as good at Waze in terms of traffic calculations and routing. It's not aggressive in telling you to GTFO the highway or take an alternate route.

What bothers me with maps 7 is that it stutters on a nexus5, top of the line specs yet it stutters, good job google. Maps 6 runs much smoother.

Yes, this is huge. The rollout came when the Nexus 4 was around and the framerates are even worse. Try running it on a Nexus 10 and it's something like 10fps. Looks choppy as hell.

had a nexus 5 for the last week and use maps 7.x extensively. no stutters at all. very fast.

the only thing that pisses me off is no simple OFFLINE MAPS CACHE. you gotta pick a map area and say OK MAPS and it will cache it. rather than let you draw nice boxes around an area and make it nice and seamless.

Stutter might of not been the word i should of used, more like it runs at a much slower framerate like DLeRium mentioned, 10-15fps.

When your panning around? Zooming in and out? Or in the nav bit?

I'm still not really seeing that.

Mind you in normal usage I don't pan around and zoom in an out as fast as I can.

Panning, zooming. I showed this in a previous youtube video where I played around with a Nexus 7v2. It's certainly not 60 fps, and it would be even more obvious if I could film in 60 fps for example.

I'm on my N5 right now and there's no way you could say that panning and zooming is 60 fps. It's closer to 10-15. Try it on a Nexus 10 and it'll be stuttery, like 5 fps.

Edit: On that note, is there an FPS counter on Android?
