does google and yahoo get paid for just showing the ad and not for it being clicked through

Hello,

i read some place the following "Yahoo depends on display ads preferred by brand marketers, while Google's focus is on Web search ads."

does yahoo and google get paid for the ad if the ad is clicked on, or simply just by displaying the ad?

i don't know about the side ads, but google gets paid for having XYZ website appear at the top of the search results whether it's clicked on or not.

Most of the google ads are CPC (cost per click) but publishers can choose to have CPM (cost per 1000 impressions). Yahoo search ads are similar, but the banner ads on yahoo's pages are probably CPM or negotiated as a package.

i guess the impression is when the ad just appears and is not clicked?

so google gets paid by companies if the site appears at the top of the search results, what is the difference between them and the sponsored links which appear on the side of the page?

so the ads can be negotiated depending on proportion of CPM and CPC or one or the other, correct?

The ones on the side of the page are CPC (cost per click)

If no one clicks on the CPC ads, Google does not make money.

The cost of CPC are decided by bidding on keywords by the publishers (companies placing the ads). When I said negotiate for CPM ads earlier, it was meant for a very large campaign.

so the search results which are not on the side are not advertised, since such searches bring up bbc, wiki.

does google use any CPM in its search results?

does yahoo reply more on CPM or CPC?
