Does going pee in the middle of the night reset your REM cycle?

I don't think it is normal to have to wake up 4 times a night to pee. You should talk to your doctor about that.

I'll go one, two, or sometimes 3 times per night depending on how much milk I consume in the evening. I drink a lot of it.

You know what, I've studied sleep in so many classes, it's sickening, but I've never heard of the differentiation of what happens when you wake up. Let me look up some research and I'll try to get back to you.

I believe the cycle does "reset" if you wake up long enough to urinate, but I'm not positive. I do know, though, that excessive nocturia is associated with multiple other factors related to decreased quality of sleep (and of life).

I can see exposure to a bright bathroom light messing up your sleep cycle, your body could think it's a signal to wake up. On a related note, I've read that nighttime light exposure, even briefly, can increase cancer risk.

I don't see how it couldn't. If you're waking up and moving around, as well as exposing yourself to light and sound, you're obviously going to interrupt the cycle.

I stopped doing that a long time ago. Milk, for the most part, is very fattening. I also found that I would wake up with a nasty coating of flim in my throat that I would hack up. I rarely drink milk at all anymore.

i drink water a lot and a couple protein shakes right before bed... so i wake up quite a bit. i've been to the doc plenty recently. when i wake up for a pee, i just stumble my way over and sit down to pee. i almost doze back off while i'm on the can. i feel like it's the best way to do it so as not to wake up fully. :)

I don't have those problems at all.

Sitting down to pee for a guy, LOL. I guess it does beat pissing all over the rim if you are trying to pee standing up in the dark.

Yeah, actually this is a big problem for me. I just want a decent nights sleep, but I'm always having to go because my diet is a lot of liquid.

This is one of the better things you can do (i.e., leave the lights off) if you frequently get up to urinate and then have trouble falling asleep again afterward.

Although trying not to drink any liquids at all for an hour or two before bed could help even more. Not always possible, but generally effective.

The floor of my bedroom is so covered with bags, computer component boxes, and study notes that if I did that I'd probably break a leg.

Nocturia...peeing at night actually disrupts the sleep cycle, it's even more prevalent as we get older.

and yes people, peeing while sitting down is perfectly acceptable in your own home. i know where my toilet seat has been, and where it's going :)

I don't think I've ever woke up having to pee, and I drink a ton of fluids. There's probably something wrong with me

There's nothing wrong with. WE lose water by other means instead of urinating:

- sweating
- breathing
- drooling
- bowel movements
- metabolism
