Does Gmail have universal user names?

I have a friend who lives in Austria who wrote down her email address and told me it was at googlemail. Does anyone know if the ending important - i.e. is abc@googlemail.com the same as abc@gmail.com ?

Or does anyone know the googlemail address of someone who is connecting in Austria? For instance in hotmail, the addresses are related to country (abc@hotmail.co.uk). Does google do that or is it all googlemail.com

I just confirmed with my own address that xxxxxxx@gmail.com is the same as xxxxxxx@googlemail.com - also it doesn't matter where you put the .'s, xx.xxxx or xxxxx.x

Thanks! I always thought the . thing was kind of weird, but its helped to get lots of extra coupons.

its because in germany the gmail was already taken.
