Does GA-7vtxe have an issue with memory?

I have a 256 mb module of Crucial PC2100 and everything runs great on my GA-7vtxe. However, I just added another stick and the memory counter goes to 288 MB then beeps once then 3 times, goes to the dual boot screen then blacks out.

I take the module out and everything works great again.

Is this a stick issue or does the MB have an issue I can correct (in the BIOS)?

thanks

UPDATE New stick of RAM did not help. I don't think this is a RAM issue, but a MB/driver/BIOS issue. Gigabyte website down for Chinese New Year Holiday. Any help now would be appreciated.

Thanks

Maybe the ram is bad?

Or perhaps, as some have noted, the ram was not seated correctly or placed in backwards.

Arrrg... WHAT a HORRID HORRRRID motherboard.... and what can I say about the company??

I had a GA-7VTXE.. man that board is stupid stupid dumb. I had a water cooling system to keep the dam Athlon 1.3 at 38 degrees C. And the DAMN thing wont install any software. I got rid of it.. I had 3 Gigabyte motherboards and they all failed.. (i never have problems with the rest of my boards) It would have Memory issues for days on end, I couldnt install a a god damn OS. Even Red HAt 6.2 I mean it stinks. If I were you I wouldnt even try to figure out whats the deal with that thing and get rid of it.. that's why THG hated it (they rated the GA-7VTH, with lan and better sound) just click Here I know it they talk about the Dual Bios.. but i mean its a slow board not work anything over 65 bucks. Gigabyte has a BIOS out the F5 (12-24-2001) and that didnt fix the problems I had with this board.. do your self a favor and the headache.. do like the Anandechs do.. get a Dell dude...errr... get a Epox 8KHA+.. Good luck buddy

Iron Woode,

I tried reseating and putting it in different slots but no go. The RAM must be bad.

KGB,

Sounds like you've had a few problems with the 7vtxe! So far, I haven't had any of the problems you have. I've tried to oc it, but have only gotten to 138 fsb. That's with stock cooling. I'll see what I can get with the Alpha pal 8045.

In the meantime, looks like I'm RMAing some RAM tomorrow.

Thanks for your help and comments.

I pretty sure that the board can handle more than 256 because I saw people in the amdmb forums with 512(2x256 & 1x512). Well at least I hope so cause I want to get another stick of 256 if the prices go down to what they were before. Its probably something with your motherboard. Hope you'll be able to get it fixed.

DKNG,

I'm beginning to think it is a MB problem. I also saw the sigs of people on amdmb with more than 256 MB of RAM. I thought for sure this was a problem that could easily be fixed in the BIOS or something. The fact that the RAM counter on post spins up to a number between 266 and 294 with the two sticks gave me the idea that maybe something in the BIOS needed to be changed. I also thought for sure that I read about this problem somewhere else on the net. I'll contact Gigabyte next week I guess (They'll be back after Chinese new year).

Thanks

Hey Yerdy does the F5 bios fix the usb mouse problem in winxp? My board came with F4 bios and I'm using 98/XP but when I boot up xp the mouse it really laggy but 98 is fine. If you look on the gigabyte website there is an F5d bios for 7vtxh that says "Fixed: USB mouse and Windows XP issue". Is there one out for the GA-7vtxe?

DKNG,

I'm not sure. Is there a way to use the dual BIOS and flash with the f5D, but go back to the f4 if the issue is not resolved?

Good Luck!

Would that screw up my bios since the F5d bios is meant for the GA-7vtxh? I dont know why they would release that update for the GA-7vtxh but not for the GA-7vtxe since they are pretty much the same.
