Does Firefox automatically (and by default) block popup boxes?

My brother called me today and his old Win2000 desktop was practically at a standstill, choked by popups, spyware, virus threats, who knows?

When he finally had some kind of handle on the machine I had him download and install Firefox and AVG Free (in that order because his IE was all but useless), and he's running a full system scan right now. Immediately upon installation it found two threats, which I had him "heal." The Firefox was much more snappy than his IE, which was probably version 6.x.

Will his Firefox automatically block popups?

We are probably going to get him a new computer, and with some kind of Vista installed in a month or so.

first of all he shouldn't be using win2k. its no longer supported as far as i know...no patches, no security. wee!

plus if he's been running an out of date ie for so long, he might as well format his drive now😉

I asked him if he has a way of reinstalling his OS and he doesn't know and evidently doesn't want to think about that. His inclination right now is to get a new computer, but in the interim (i.e. the next month) he wants to do away with the horribly frustrating experience he's having with his computer. I'll call him today and find out if installing Firefox and AVG Free 7.5 have improved things enough that he can get along for that month. Thanks.

BTW, AFAIK, W2K is still supported. I understand that MS announced that support was finite and announced the cutoff date.
