Does FedEx require someone to sign for packages?

I ordered everything for a new computer I'm building and just checked the tracking info. It said the estimated deliver was before 4:30pm. Hardly ever am I or anyone else home before 4:30pm, so will they leave the packages or do they hold onto it and try back another time? This may be a dumb question but I never get anything from UPS or FedEx so I have no idea.

They can leave it on the porch, I've had them do that before. Or an apartment office.

Depends greatly on the vendor (ie, the entity from which the items were purchased). Some vendors require a signature for delivery, others do not. If you do not have a signature waiver on file with FedEx (supposition would suggest not), you can simply leave a note for the courier with instructions. Here is an example.

Would call FedEx customer service, as they will be able to tell whether a signature is required or not.

They've left stuff on my porch before without me asking them, so it's not required unless the person who's shipping it wants a signature I think.

ActuaryTm that's one reason I'm building a new computer, I'm on a P133 laptop until the stuff comes and I can't even read .doc's :( My old one's hard drive died and I was long past due for a new one. Everything is from Newegg if that means anything. Would a simple "Go ahead and leave the packages on the porch" work?

Sometimes they will leave a note on your door that you can fill out to have packages left w/o a signature in the future. The note says, however, that with any packages valued over $100 it is still left up to the discretion of the driver. If it doesn't look like the package will get stolen, he might leave it there. YMMV

Fairly certain Newegg does not require a signature for their shipments - at least, none of my orders have required shipments.

If you feel safe having the shipment left in that location, the note you suggest should suffice. Be aware, however, that if a note is left (hence, waiver or waiving) and for some reason the shipment is stolen or otherwised damaged (weather, unfriendly neighbors, etc), one would be hard pressed to hold the delivery company liable.

I received a package from FEDEX this past Friday. Driver just dumped it on the front porch. I was home, however.

Seems to depend on the driver for me. I've had it left on my porch if I'm not here, and I've also gotten a "we missed you, will try tomorrow" letter in my screen door. I've had them just hand me stuff when here, and been asked to sign as well *shrug*.
