Does fat free milk expire faster than 2% or whole?

I bought 2 gallons of fat free milk the other week because they were out of 2%. Sell by date was Sept 7th, and usually I am able to drink my milk for at least another week. Well I tried to make a protein shake yesterday and it was amazingly sour. Today I smelled it and it was rotten and I poured it out into the sink and it was all chunks.. ew

It's been my experience that the less fat there is in milk the longer it keeps. I suspect the store let the milk get too warm before getting it in the fridge.

Same here. Expiration dates for milk seem to be complete BS these days tho.

My wife goes strictly by expiration date. I go by "my stomach is made of iron, nothing can hurt it!".

As for fat free milk, it does seem to keep longer than other types.

You children are too young to remember, probably, but some years ago the big milk producers argued that the expiration dates were too stringent and got them relaxed. The producers said if they extended the sell by dates no one would be affected.

Yeah, since they did this I routinely can't get through a container without it going bad.

buy smaller containers?

temperature is also going to have a lot to do with this... the milk is sitting in your cart for however long you're browsing the grocery store, then it's riding in your hot car on the way home, and it's inevitably near the front of your refrigerator, which is the area most susceptible to temperature changes every time you open/close the door.

I haven't had milk go bad in awhile, but I always err on the side of caution when choosing which sized container to buy.
