Purchased it during the recent Steam sale.. Was expecting to load it up and start playing.. but suddenly I had to pick all sorts of character attributes, skills, perks.. holy CRAP.. 30 minutes to just start the damn game.. Ok ok ok ok.. picked stuff, went into the first city and started walking around.. apparently random strangers are willing to give you weapons and let you steal all their shit.. Apparently its OK for me to clean out the bar's cash register when I need money.

So I start doing some of the early 'tasks'.. it teaches you a little, but still there is all sorts of stuff they don't explain. Maybe I had to play the previous games to understand it? Checking out some online guides seems to make it even more complex.. magazines, implants, leveling up.. Thought this was more of a FPS. I guess i was wrong.

Does it get better? Should I plod through the mundane (Walk over here, pick this up, walk over there, pick that up, do some voodoo over a fire) missions and get to the better stuff? Also what is strange is I have no idea who are the good people, which side I should support, people I should help.. looks like I have a lot of freedom in choosing sides but I have no clue as to who or why I should help one over the other.

Did you like 3? I personally LOVED Fallout 3, so when I started New Vegas, I was a bit underwhelmed because of all the extra BS they added... but rest assured, it does get better. If FO3 was a 9/10 (I think it was, or at least close...) then New Vegas was like a 8/10. In some ways, I liked New Vegas better, and in others I didn't. I played it when it first came out, so there were some game balance issues with things like the Death Claws, but I ended up mostly using the Anti-Material gun and sniping everything. The light machine gun is also devastating to just about everything as well.

So to answer your question, yes it does get better!

Ok I guess I went into it thinking it was more of a shooter than a RPG.. But I didn't research it much.

Then a lot of people won't like you that you steal from.
I went with the good side, which is the NCR.
The legion = bad.

I don't steal anything unless its something really valuable. Like a 4000 cap energy weapon.
If the cursor turns red on an item, you are stealing. If it stays yellow, you are fine.

There's no right and wrong way to things, unless you kill yourself I guess. Do whatever you feel like doing as your character as that's the whole point of an RPG. IMO a lot of the fun is lost if you just follow what somebody else tells you to do.

Thread starter, you have me a good laugh :D New Vegas is a good game, but the beginning can be boring. Once you leave that small village, interesting things will begin.
Another thing - this game is different from other fps in that there is no clear path for you - you have to choose it yourself. Just look into the gameworld and decided what you would like to do in it. Perhaps you will want to destroy the California Republic. Perhaps you will want to kill everything that moves, or become peoples protector and hero. Just do what you want:)

I had a similar response to New Vegas early on (having not played the other Fallouts) and was constantly waiting for the game to get cool.

I ended up just messing with all the factions and being a semi lecherous do gooder and double crosser.

Its fun when the factions send bounty hunters to come get you if you rape on them too harshly. They are good fun to blow away, a needed diversion from shooting nuclear waste skanks.

I accidentally beat the game before I got through all of the missions and wandering, but I think that just freed up some time in the real world to move on to something else.

Hopefully Fallout 4 will have a better plot, or more dramatic changes in story, less wandering around.

I was about to show some sympathy but when you said it took you 30 minutes to start I realized what the problem was.
And it aint the game.

New vegas isnt for you. Dont sweat it, no game should ever go for EVERY type of gamer. It usually ends up sucking.

I got it on sale from D2D a while ago. 12$ I'm not sure if I can stand looking at a bunch of toons walking around with a major stick up their butt. GameBryo won't be missed.

I'm guessing you never played FO3 then? It's not really an FPS. It's more of an RPG from the first person perspective. There is a lot to do and it's very freeform. If you want a linear experience I suggest you try something else.

Stealing only affects karma unless someone sees you. If you steal from the NCR, but you are always hidden and no NCR people see you steal, then they won't know.

However, karma still affects which factions you side with. Get too much negative karma, and the NCR probably won't warm up to you.

Oh and you can steal a little and still be fine. My main character has super high karma and I still steal pretty often. Only expensive stuff usually but I do enough other good things to more than make up for it.

Not 100% on the NCR being good.

Yeah, New Vegas is not as clear-cut as many games. Most of the "good guys" have strayed pretty far from their original goals. The Brotherhood of Steel used to be all about protecting technology for future generations. By the time New Vegas rolls around, they don't care about anyone but themselves, and they don't care about any technology that isn't combat-oriented. And they steal tech from people. The NCR are well-intentioned but corrupt and expand quickly whether anyone likes it or not. People are usually better off because of them, and they're better than Caesar's Legion, but they're not 100% good. Even the Enclave was evil in FO2 and FO3, but they're portrayed more sympathetically in New Vegas.

It makes it a lot more fun! The previous games were pretty black and white.

hehehe... why would you consider the "NCR" "good"? They come and basically make a proclaimation that this is now NCR controlled territory, with so, and so laws. The "Boomers" certainly wouldn't agree that the NCR are good.

Want to make it interesting, kill all of the people in the first town you are in.

Its an RPG and that means you decide what role you play. In this case, you can choose to kill everyone in sight if you want and most decisions aren't simple black and white choices between good and evil. If you want to hurry up and get to the more challenging and exciting parts of the game and play more of a straight shooter game here are some tips:

Boost your agility, endurance, and luck. The "wild wasteland perk" also allows you to get the alien blaster later in the game.

Stick to the roads. If you run into deathclaws you've gone the wrong way. Just follow the main roads and look for places to buy and sell weapons. Once you get to Vegas you should have plenty of cash, places to buy weapons, and choices of what to do next.

Doesn't take a whole lot to convince them though.

NCR pretty much play the role of lesser of two (or more) evils. When your typical wastelander is threatened by raiders, fiends, gangs, and the Legion, the NCR doesn't seem so bad.
