Does everyone who OC's use thermal compound?

I tried it on my first cpu (1.1tbird) and i just could not get it even on the core. I ended it scratching it and the fan (alpha)(I hate this fan, very hard to get on)). I just don't want to risk it. I am thinking of buying the silver mountain HSF and would like to know if this should be sufficient. If I OC, It wont be much. I have a 1333, and I might try to get 1400 or maybe 1500 while staying at 45c under load.

lots of people do small overclocking with just the pad that comes pasted to the bottom of the heatsink, and thats usually ok, but if you are going to be really overclocking its important to keep the temp down, and you cant keep it down very well with no thermal compound

I echo that. Especially when you're overclocking...ya don't wanna kill the chip (unless it's a $35 750 Duron and you don't mind buying another for experimentation purposes. 😉 )

LOL!

I used the white jizz that came with my Vantec HSF. My Athlon 1.33 is happily running at 1.5.

I couldn't fork over the $9~$10 for that expensive Artic Silver stuff. I guess some think of it as cheap insurance even if it does nothing.
