Did Sony mandate all Japanese to own a PS2? I only knew a few people who had them here in the states before they started making the tiny one. That is mucho numbers. Nintendo is pushing those with the Advance and the DS as well.

EDIT: VG Charts is a sweet site, you can see how the SNES rocked Nintendo's world!

I thought worldwide sales of PS2 were over 100 million.

Yeah, that chart tool is pretty cool. If you compare PS3 and PS2, the PS3 is keeping up to this point. Of course, "PS2" and "third place" were never uttered in the same sentence unless that sentence included "GameCube." ;) And excluding the failed Dreamcast, PS2 was the first to launch last generation. And regardless of how well the PS3 is tracking the PS2's sales, the Wii is laying the smackdown on all comers.

All that to say, it takes more than a technically superior system to be dominant. The PS2 was the weakest of the last generation. The Wii is by far the weakest of this generation. And so on and so forth. It also takes more than a dominant previous generation. See: Atari, Sega, Nintendo. All had the top console or one of the top two consoles of one generation, only to be knocked down by a newcomer the next generation.

As Bill Clinton would say, "it's the game, stupid."

If I'm reading the chart right, the Wii is selling nearly 3 times as fast as the PS2 did.

Quite impressive considering the PS2 had little/no competition at launch while the Wii had a simultaneous PS3 launch and an established XBOX 360 to deal with.

Yeah, the PS2 is selling well. The DS and Wii have the best chances of selling at least that well this generation.

Just some quick corrections :p :

GameCube was second place worldwide, but third place in North America.

SEGA was never on top. Even the SNES eventually beat the Genesis.

EDIT to my EDIT: This edit is just to say that in my first edit, I changed "Yah" to "Yeah". :)

Wikipedia reports 21 million GameCubes sold worldwide and 24 million Xboxes sold worldwide. Many of the GameCube's sales came after the price drop to $99 (including mine). :)

Never said they did. I said "had the top console or one of the top two consoles." Added that last part in specifically for Sega. They may not have been on top, but they were a major player. And when Sony came along it was the end of Sega (although it took them 2 consoles to accept it).
