I have an old sony tv (actually its technically a monitor since it doesn't have a tuner). I use it when i watch svds/divx. However when it's on, i get stripes all over my computer-monitor which i posisioned nearby, this interference is clearly comming from the tv. My question is: Is this harmful to my monitor in the long run? And if so, will turning the monitor while the tv is on help the situation?

not really. the only thing that I think could have the change of damanging your monitor is in a long long long run, like 10 years of perpetual exposure to interference. monitors are produced under FCC Rule 15, which says it is able to receive EM interference.
