Does Echostar / DirectTV require a active phone line??

You can get DirecTV without an active phone line. However, they will set you PPV spending limit to $0 so you will not be able to order PPV's with the remote. You can order them online or by phone. Ordering by phone adds a service charge.

Only if you plan on ordering PPV through the unit. You can do it by phone ($1.50 charge) and I don't think it requires a line then.

I never order ppv and don't keep the line in.

Actually last I checked it was a $50 dollar limit with those who are activated without an active phone line...Once you reach your limit, you will have to call and pay the card off
