Does eBay do anything to stop the spammers?

I listed two very different items on eBay ending over this weekend. One was a GPS and another was a laptop. In both cases, I probably averaged one e-mail from a spammer for each item every two-three hours the auctions were up. That's a lot of messages and they were all from different usernames.

The site has degenerated into this over the past year. I can't jump on the I'm taking my business elsewhere train because they are still the largest marketplace, but this is very annonying.

The problem is most of these spammers are in foreign countries where it might not be easy to ask for a credit card on signup or something. But seriously, for the hoops US users jump through, the least they could do is put a limit on how many users someone with less than 5 or 10 feedback can contact. For example, new or low feedback members shouldn't be able to contact more than 5 sellers a day unless the seller replies (suggesting it was a legitimate question). Harder restrictions could be in place in countries where most of these spams originate from.

I'm sure if you emailed them about the specific accounts they'd look into them and remove the accounts/block the email addresses.

I doubt they'd take the time to go through every person that signs up and do a spammer check though.

The point is they should have a system like I suggested in place to prevent the spam from being sent out. If you had a limit on how many contacts per new account in place and 1000 new accounts were made in one small IP block, then they can ban that IP block etc. That's just one of many things they could do if they cared. Point is, it's easier for them to just pretend the problem doesn't exist.

If you think that's bad, don't ever post anything on craigslist.

Use your cities craigslist.org so you can deal with the interested buyer in person. They can test the item to avoid later disputes that it is not working or also become damaged because of shipping.
