I listed two very different items on eBay ending over this weekend. One was a GPS and another was a laptop. In both cases, I probably averaged one e-mail from a spammer for each item every two-three hours the auctions were up. That's a lot of messages and they were all from different usernames.
The site has degenerated into this over the past year. I can't jump on the I'm taking my business elsewhere train because they are still the largest marketplace, but this is very annonying.
The problem is most of these spammers are in foreign countries where it might not be easy to ask for a credit card on signup or something. But seriously, for the hoops US users jump through, the least they could do is put a limit on how many users someone with less than 5 or 10 feedback can contact. For example, new or low feedback members shouldn't be able to contact more than 5 sellers a day unless the seller replies (suggesting it was a legitimate question). Harder restrictions could be in place in countries where most of these spams originate from.
