Does... dual 32bit beat a 64bit cpu?...

Xeons aren't 64bit..

The old xeons were P2s or P3s with 2MB of Fullspeed L2 cache.

The new coppermine xeons are coppermines with a Slot2.
they are crap...they are just more expensive

The Dual P3 would eat a Single Xeon for lunch if your apps use SMP.

it depends on other optimizations with respect to 32bit'ness and 64bit'ness.

the differences are very dramatic. at any given clock speed, the dual 32bit will outperform the 64bit processor with respect to 32bit optimized software, even more so if the software has been optimized for SMP.

the SMP can't touch the 64bit processor with respect to 64bit software.

note, the programs we run are hybrids... some are 16\32, some are 32, some are 32\64 bit software.

yes, we do have 64bit software that is being run on these dinky 32bit parts.

Would you give us an example?

When it comes to software, i do not know much, except for the common server apps like Oracle, MySQL and other database servers and the multiple interfaces used to connect to them, the client and desktop apps like various office applications and lately i have been involved in quite a few audio/video professional setups too (boy, has this forum been a great help in designing those setups).

64bit is not necessary faster
all it means is that it can address more memory (more than 4Gbyte, i am not talking about the page size extension)
and your datasize can be 64bit
