Does DSL still suck?

I used to have DSL back in '98 and the experience was awful - having to log in instead of it being always on, random drop outs.. At least 2 or 3 days worth of outages a month (in the North East). They used to blame covad and then covad blamed verizon, so the techs rarely were able to do anythign about it...

But I'm thinking about switching from ccable to save quite a bit of money. Reliability is important not speed, really - how reliable is it now or is it the same deal?

I never had any problems with Verizon or AT&T...my router handles the login, and its always live. Excellent reliability.

I've had it disconnect me for a couple of hours one time this year at night. Otherwise, no other problems. Maybe 1-2 downtimes a year, for a few minutes each. Pretty reliable considering it's home dsl.

Getting 3mbps/786k with Verizon here. Never had to log in and for almost 1 1/2 years we've only had 1 outage of about a day.

..so far that's my experience. I signed up for the minimum sevice 14.95 and so far it's great and very fast. AT+T/yahoo.

it used to be balls slow (according to various neighbors). But I gave it a shot now because it's still $10-15 cheaper than comcast, and I get a better upstream. And it has been good. Downstream is similar (real world ~2-3mbps for both... i never got the 6mbps from comcast they claim). upstream is about 4-500kbps (vs ~250kbps for comcast)... all real world numbers. Upstream was important to me, and well, so is cost.

It will blip every now and then to grab a new IP. And it's blipped for more than a few minutes twice now in the past two months.
