Does DSL still require paying for a landline?

I thought I read somewhere that some state(s) had passed a law making it illegal for companies to force customers to pay for a landline service if they wanted DSL. Does anyone have any more details about this? Or if it's not true at all?

are you sure? cuz i ordered phone service just to get dsl. i thought there needs to be a phone # associated w/ the dsl plan?

I'm a Verizon customer. They're making me pay for a landline with local service only here in NY. I just called customer service and they said there was no way to drop the $20/month I pay just to have the line. Does this guy not know what he's talking about?

probably not. i'm paying about $6/month for real basic universal lifeline service from verizon so it's not too bad. but if i can drop $6 off my bill a month, that's an extra meal at mcdonalds!

Not with Verizon. You get a $5/month discount on DSL if you have a landline though. And obviously the physical line has to be in place.

yup, i'm doing the same thing.. and i think my method is illegal, since i dont meet the dependant requirements.. so it'd be nice to get that damn landline off of my bill

Huh? Pacific Bell no longer exists. It was bought by SBC.

Can't buy what you already own. Pac Bell and Nevada Bell were already owned by Southwestern Bell which just consolidated it all under the SBC name to get around all the anti trust regulation. I used to do DSL support for Southwestern Bell.

Check into speakeasy.net they were able to hook me up without a phone line.

SBC required me to get a phone line, but it didn't have to be any specific type of phone service, or even service from them. I dunno if it's a technical thing or what, but I don't think they're trying to squeeze more money out of me since they didn't force me to use their phone service.

Funny, just from the thread alone, it seems that companies that provide the phone service also require it. But a company that doesn't sell local service (speakeasy) doesn't require it...

Things that make you go hmmmmm......

DSL will run fine over a "dry pair," but companies don't want to give up their pairs for DSL only - They'd rather force you to pay for landline service as well.

Because they don't own the wire.

That makes sense.

Though really, it's not like I don't need the landline. I live in a gigantic cellphone Dead Zone, both TDMA and GSM, any company, any service.

My point is one you were making, it runs just fine over 'dry' wires so the 'requirement' from companies that are the only ones who provide the service is 'funny.'

It's like being told, oh you want a telephone, well you have to get cable TV too... One has nothing to do with the other.
