Does Drivers Update in windows update not work anymore?

For 3 legitimate windows XP SP1, I tried on 3 different computers and drivers update on the MS windows update page is grayed out and doesnt scan. Critical and recommended are all going through as usual.

I can still download drivers in the "basket" manual download thing but i liked it when windows auto-detected my missing drivers....

Is it just me?

It suggested I upgrade my ATI Drives last week. It actually recommended another driver also, I think it was the monitor .inf but I am not positive.

u did this now? I noticed this problem last week too. I thought a specific driver server was down or something but i tried again just now and it still doesnt work...

It usually updates my video, modem, LAN, sound etc etc. it was pretty handy

I think it only works when there are available drivers submitted to Microsoft by hardware vendors. Most of the time your hardware is not updated simply becuase Microsoft does not have the latest drivers. Maybe MS is charging manufacturers to have drivers added to the update system and that's why Windows Update does not have all the latest drivers in their database. I had my Creative Soundblaster PCI (on WinXP) and Intel webcam (on Win2k) drivers updated by Windows Update very recently. Intel and Creative are two very rich companies who obviously would not have problems paying MS.

Oh i understand that.

But it didnt do it AT ALL. Im still using old drivers for my modem and LAN after i reformatted. Last time it gave me updates.

now its grayed was out unless i manually search and download for it in the "basket". only critical and recommended are working automatically.

Just wondering whether it was grayed out for anyone else. Guess Hdeck confirmed it for me. 🙁 Thanks, those that read this.

I just tried and it downloaded an update for my monitor. But when I installed XP saturday I didn't get any drivers updates.

Gotcha! Sorry about the misunderstanding.

I just checked Windows Update, and the drivers section seems to be working fine for me. In fact, there's a driver update available. I'm in Japan using a Japanese OS, though. I'm probably on a different server.

How long have you been unable to use the driver update? If it's just a day or so, Microsoft could be having problems with their US servers.
