Does double-sided memory matter?

Just recently purchased two pairs of this memory (crucial pc3200 cl=3 512MB) except that it is single-sided. My question is does double-sided make a difference for an Athlon 64 (socket 939)? I just remember it having something to do with 3.2GBps versus 6.4.

it matters on old pc133 or older on some mother boards they only read 128 mb as 64Mb
but in youre case no it dose not matter and maby you got Dual channel mixed up :)

The numbers you have are single vs. dual "channel", not single vs dual "sided". It does matter a little (someone did a comparison on this a few days ago, possibly AT, but I can't remember). But the differences aren't massive, and the ideal configuration depends on the particular system.

Which numbers are you referring to? Is the 6.4 I mentioned enabled when using dual-channel? I was talking about when you have memory chips on both sides of the DIMM, it is double-sided. I do know that dual-channel means two memory channels instead of one. :) But in several motherboard manuals, it is listed that you can have either single-sided or double-sided dimms, so I wanted to know what the difference was in performance terms.

Memory info

This might be of some help. What is the full Crucial part # of your memory? I've learned that just because a stick of RAM has chips on both sides doesnt automatically mean it is double-sided, but it can still be arranged in single-sided array..

Not that I'm aware of..of course the crucial site is down at the moment so I can't check either.

I noticed my Gigabyte 8KNXP only supports 6 sticks of memory if some of them are single sided (actually a limitation of the chipset iirc). Of course that's a P4 board, but it is a situation where SS vs. DS has mattered. ^^ I doubt SS vs. DS affects being able to run in dual channel at all. Afterall you can run dual channel with two sticks or four sticks and both setups have the same max bandwidth despite the former having fewer banks.

I paid $85 per stick off newegg.

What would you have paid, or what type would you have considered otherwise?

i would have gotten 2 of these and saved $26. plus, better timings to boot.
