How is it even possible for it to work with satellite, since the communication is only one way (the satellite can transmit to your dish, but your dish can't 'beam up' a signal back to the satellite to request a program). Or do satellite dishes/boxes also have some kind of land-line connection to the provider?

You have to use a land line, and the box dials in to order PPV movies. I know that's how it worked when my parents had DirecTV, and I'm sure it's the same with Dish Network

Pay-Per-View is possible; I sincerely doubt that OnDemand is, though... I can't see how it would be.

It will be eventualy. Satalite dishes/boxes can send data back to the satalite, they just aren't very efficent or fast (just like satalite internet). I think the biggest problem is avaluable bandiwth from the satalite to you. It's no big deal when everyone gets the same thing but it's not like cable where everyone has a direct line to their house.

Exactly. I know that two-way satellite communication is happening all over the place. Providing on-demand to satellite customers would take up a HUGE amount of bandwidth...

Maybe if it takes advantage of DSL technology, that's probably all I can figure.

Someone with DirectTV used my Email address on their account. I don't know what to do because DirectTV keeps spamming me everytime they make a payment. I'm tempted to upgrade their package to every sports package and movie channel. It would be over $1500 a month. :p

As long as you have a satellite receiver with built-in DVR....I don't see what is so attractive about On-Demand.

And they have a HUGE amount of bandwidth. I think they could do it personally.

The two satellite providers are eating up that bandwidth with HD channels now. They are both adding more and more locals and will eventually add more national channels. That is where their priorities lie right now.

I know Time Warner has it. Bastards. Gave me a shitload of those channels.

Oh well. Sometimes they have them free for a couple days. That's always nice.

Phone line.

So wait a minute, I never knew this so call me a n00b - but basically I would have to have a land line to have satellite?? And on top of that it would tie up the connection? Why wouldn't they just use ethernet?

Like I said, I'm a n00b and I have digital cable - but I don't have a land line nor would I ever consider getting one. Who the hell uses land lines in this day and age?

Interesting. I didn't know that any Satellite TV provider offered "On Demand" service. I obviously thought it would take too much bandwidth. Nice to know. :)

You could order stuff thru the web. I cancelled HBO and the the tv was out even before the web page refreshed.

On Demand is stream content that is well, on demand, you can't do this with satellite because it doesn't have the bandwidth required to stream the media like cable can.

A phone line is only used for billing and authorization of Pay per View, it just lets you view whatever pre scheduled showing is playing, it does not stream that content to you on demand.

EDIT: I want to add that I was replying to regular satellite, but with the new HD Satellite I don't see why it couldn't be done.

Having HD content On-Demand is pretty sweet, plus DVR cost extra per month per box for most companies, whereas On-Demand comes standard with Digital cable with Comcast at least.
