Does Diet Coke cause cancer?

Aimster

someone is telling me that they saw something on t.v regarding diet sodas and that it can cause cancer.

The FDA says artificial sweetners are safe, but it wasn't that long ago the FDA said Vioxx was safe too. 😛

No

http://www.snopes.com/toxins/aspartame.asp

Is Aspartame Safe? (FDA):
To date, FDA has not determined any consistent pattern of symptoms that can be attributed to the use of aspartame, nor is the agency aware of any recent studies that clearly show safety problems.

Study Reaffirms Safety of Aspartame (MIT News):
Even daily large doses of the high-intensity sweetener aspartame, also known as NutraSweet, had no adverse effect on study subjects' health and well-being, a visiting scientist at MIT reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition last week.

"We conclude that aspartame is safe for the general population," said Paul A. Spiers, visiting scientist in the Clinical Research Center (CRC).

Penylalanine has been linked to cancer, but that's really only in GREAT (and I mean GREAT) amounts. Doubtful you'll be getting it. It's also directly linked to genetics.

I'd like to learn more about this. I wonder if 6-8 liters per day would be considered "GREAT" amounts. I sure hope not. 🙁

Well let me put it this way. They really tested it on lab mice.

Compared to a person, you'll probably need to drink about nearly a 4th of your body weight (gross assumption, but don't expect it to be anywhere near false)

Yea, one of my friends dads looked did a study on this (cell biologist at Duke) and he said that prolonged exposure can trigger cancer. Theres enough evidence so far in rats to prove this correct.

The leading cause of cancer is............life. Don't be paranoid over what causes cancer, because no matter what you do, chances are pretty good you're going to get it anyway.

Phenylalanine has been associated with expediated cell division in patients who have already been diagnosed with cancer.

I'm not into diet drinks, however, I've recently tried Diet Dr. Pepper for the first time, and found it pretty tasty. I've yet to find Diet Dr. Pepper anywhere where I live. I've only seen it in the US.

Yea Diet Coke is pretty much all I drink. 6-8 liters a day easy. The alternative would be beer probably, and I can't deal with those extra calories. 🙁 I'm thinking eventually I'll have to acquire a taste for water, as my body aint the same lately. 🙁

Have you tried unsweetened iced tea? I think it's a good alternative to diet soda.

I haven't, but I'm very open to suggestions because this Diet Coke thing is getting way out of control. I'll pick some up at the wholesale club Sunday and see if I like it. Thanks. 🙂
