Does dental insurance typically cover emergency visits?

Yesterday I noticed a little swelling around the side of my jaw. Today it's freakin' huge! You can even tell without looking in my mouth!

From one angle I look normal (well, normal for me ;)) and from the other side I look like I have John Goodman's huge pear-shaped head! It doesn't hurt or anything, though. Neither do any of my teeth.

It sure would suck to have to eat most of this one myself. I wouldn't doubt it if emergency dentist visits are way expensive. That would be my luck. Damn abcess or whatever it is. :(

Edit -- Slight exaggeration may or may not have taken place

Insurance covered it the one time I had to visit for an emergency. I'm sure it probably depends on your coverage, though.

If the emergency visit is during regular office hours it should be covered by your insurance. If, on the other hand, you get the dentist out of his warm bed at 1:30a.m. there might be a surcharge.

Dental insurance always seems to cover the standard stuff for me...no matter what coverage I had. Any emergency stuff was always extra, but the regular checkup, xrays, etc...were covered. Knock on wood, my teeth have been good to me.....
REGARDLESS OF COST OR INSURANCE....GET IT CHECKED OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was at the office earlier for other stuff and asked about getting one of those emergency appointments.

They said I had to pick up the phone and then do the code "up, R, down, L, B, Y" and then I might be able to get in today.
