Does Dell ship their new PCs with spyware now?

Here at work (I work at a school), I was setting up a computer to ghost for one of our new labs. We got Dell GX260s for the job. Intel Core Duo @ 2.80 GHz, 2GB RAM, really nice machines. So fast. But as I was uninstalling all the Dell crap from them, ie McAfee and Google Desktop and such, I noticed this (Search Asst. and URL Asst.?)

That's definitely not a "fresh from Dell" install. Why would Adobe Reader 6.0.x and Java 1.4.x be installed?

They've been installed on my last few Dell purchases.

Did a google search.. some fools seem to believe it is associated with Wild Tangent.. then if you look at other websites that list software preinstalled on Dells, you will see "ISP Search Assist" listed as one of them.

It's just a program that lets you find an ISP if you don't have one already.

Yeah, outdated Adobe and Java...
I'm gonna wipe it, I was just seein what Dell installs from the factory...I was gonna do pre-loaded, but it's crap...A Core Duo with 2GB RAM crashes or locks up when I uninstall McAfee...That's crap...

Typical Dell bloatware, why do they put crap on new pc's and load them up out of the box.

Cuz they can get money from software companies for putting poop onto their computers from the getgo to make it cheaper.

Yes, Dell is loading stuff like that by default now. We use only Dell at the university and don't even THINK about using the Dell pre-load. First thing it gets is a fresh install of XP SP2 and our own customizations. You're just asking for trouble leaving the Dell pre-load...

They preinstall Java? Well guess you'll need to format and start over. Don't want that ****** software on there.

Got a format done...Google desktop was already there, as was the IE home page set to some google-dell thing...Are Google & Dell sleeping together?

Google hits that crap nightly.

It's a shame they build such good systems but ruin it for typical end-users with their sh!tty pre-loads.

LUCKILY, Dell, at least, unlike other manufacturers, includes a plain old XP disc with the system, and not some image restore discs.

pentium D, not core dual

Nope, it's a core duo...

Intel® Pentium® D Processor 960 (3.60GHz, 2X2M, 800MHz FSB) [add $430 or $10/month2]
May delay your OptiPlex GX620 ship date

Intel® Pentium® D Processor 950 (3.40GHz, 2X2M, 800MHz FSB) [add $190 or $4/month2]

Intel® Pentium® D Processor 940 (3.20GHz, 2X2M, 800MHz FSB) [add $100 or $2/month2]

Intel® Pentium® D Processor 930 (3.00GHz, 2X2M, 800MHz FSB) [add $60 or $1/month2]

Intel® Pentium® D Processor 820 (2.8GHz,DC,2X1M,800MHz FSB) [Included in Price]
Dell Recommended

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 670 with HT (3.8GHz, 2M, 800MHz FSB) [add $536 or $13/month2]

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 650 with HT (3.4GHz, 2M, 800MHz FSB) [add $106 or $2/month2]

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 640 with HT (3.2GHz, 2M, 800MHz FSB) [add $51 or $1/month2]

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 630 with HT (3GHz, 2M, 800MHz FSB) [add $21]

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 521 with HT (2.8GHz, 1M, 800MHz FSB) add $0

Unless they removed it, none of those are Core Duo. Dual core, yes; Core Duo, no. Also the only Core Duo out right now are laptop processors, and I don't think Dell uses laptop CPUs in their desktops.
