Does decent gaming laptop exist < $1k?

Hello folks,

Just got a decent traveling job and am sick of the ol' quadro fx 350m Dell school laptop. While I'd like to game a little more than nil I also know that investing in a nice desktop is where real power value is at.

I'm hoping you could point me to some laptops < $1000 that could last me in gaming at least a few years.

Which seems like the better deal?

some crazy deal on ebay or other source I don't know? I know there are some Dells with 650s and 7730s floating around at 600-700 dollars.

Would like to game with my buddies on some of the free fps's, flight and battle simulators (warthunder, some air and land battle game), and rts (Mideival II, ron, Rome II if ever optimized, etc)
and I'm totally fine with graphics on medium for a few years.
Size / weight no issue to me.

Does the hm77 mobo on each of these prohibit oc? What about the programs like msi afterburner and asus oc?

Looked at notebook check reviews and couldn't understand which screen quality was better, no strong preferences glossy vs matte.
Would like some desktop replacement, but I already have carrying bag, backpack, and cooling pad for 15.6."

Any experiences with either machine? Does y500 have decent cooling? Is the 670mx with the 3630 a decent lasting machine?

Do the cpu differences make any difference besides strategy games?

Any direction / experience you give would be much appreciated,

I thought long and hard about the mini's, it just seems like too much work to construct right now. Pre-constructed runs over 1000 not including necessary accessories.

Not to mention the hassles of possibly transporting the mutli-part machinery through an airline. If I knew I was just driving my car that'd be different.

Sorry, laptop is probably the best for my situation.

If you are looking at lenovo try the y510p. 4700mq, SLI 750m should be much faster. Should be around $1000 if you can get it on sale.

Keep an eye on the Lenovo website. They have a lot of good deals. Right now they have a y500 with a dual core i5 and sli 650 m . The price was between 800 and 850 dollars.

Not a powerhouse, but should handle light gaming.

This seems like a pretty sweet deal and I'd leap on it except that it doesn't feature a warranty anywhere.
Anyone have any experience with Newegg Open box laptops and whether they seem like a safe bet? I think the policy is return only within 30 days of invoice

May I ask how much the Open Box Lenovo Y510p was priced at? All it shows is "discontinued" now :(. Just curious thanks.

Newegg has the Lenovo y500 with i5 and dual 650m for 799 with promo code. Refurbed asus i7 with 670mx for 899. Lower price, pretty good service from newegg, the lenovo still has manufacturer warranty.
Which is the better deal? Newegg's certainly a better price by $50 than what Lenovo is offering.

The lenovo y510 with dual sli was being offered for 939, with haswell i7, 1TB + some SSD (8G / 25G). For 999 the product included an external bluray drive, same laptop specs. The thing that worried me was the lack of any kind of warranty.
Also didn't know if the 2G of vram on sli models were going to be enough with the likelihood of next-gen consoles probs using more, and with the supposedly easier ability to port over, also pc games. Same with the dual core, 4 with hyperthread, i5.

Thanks for the information. I'm pretty sure Lenovo has a 1yr warranty on their Ideapads as standard (I'd be surprised if for some reason, this 1yr warranty does that apply to purchases made at NewEgg, since they're a major online computer parts retailer).

By the way, if you have a MicroCenter nearby, they sell the Y510p with haswell i7, 1TB + cache, and dual nVidia 750m's (in SLI) for $999.99 + tax.
