Does decent free Antivirus exist?

As above, I'm sick of spending $50-$90 for a year or two of antivirus protection that inevitably allows a virus to get on the PC anyways.

+1 for Avast free version. Been using it for a few years now never had any issues with it. One of the features I like is the web and network shields. blocks malicious websites. support is decent too. the developers help out in their forums. strongly recommend Avast.

Locking down your system and keeping your software up to date is just as important as having good AV. People seem to think that AV will stop their systems from getting infected and that's just not true. It'll help stop the known viruses but the others it just won't block. I fix tons of systems with active AV that are infected.

I am surprised to see so many attesting to MSE. I've always ignored MS anti-virus efforts, thinking they'd be weak or otherwise not good enough.

Could any of you MSE users compare it with other AV software? Have you used Avira or Avast, how do they compare?

I used Avira on my desktop and Avast on the laptop, and find Avast has fewer popups. I think they are doing an adequate job of protection, as tested by scans by other softwares, sometimes even Norton; and of course, no symptoms of virus.

I don't use AVG or Avast anymore because of all the false positives. I've used MSE for about two years now and haven't had one false positive.

Compare AV's here until your heart's content.

Sure they do

Microsoft = MSE

Latest test show they performed the worst of the bunch for samples detected but at the same time, was the only one with 0 false positives.

That being said, it's also referring to version 2.1 and not the 4.x

Thanks - and they do; I must have been asleep when I looked.

With that performance, looks like I don't need to change my AVs - MSE is a single-star performer there.

MSE on all my machines here. never had an issue. honestly a good majority of the viruses are avoided with good browsing habits. MSE is a solid, solid product, and to me the most important thing, it stays out of the way. Nothing like Norton acting more like a virus (slowing everything down, popups about updates and renewing every year, etc) than most viruses.

MSE can be combined with free Malwarebytes. Together they shine. MSE is faster in updating itself, and allows faster booting and loading of Windows.

MSE probably has the least affect on performance. However, they all suck and eventually something will get by if you keep visiting questionable sites, running questionable software, etc. Pretty much every time I've had to clean someone's PC, they've had an up to date, paid A/V installed that didn't catch it.
