Does DDR2 automatically downclock itself?

it's for a dell dimension 4700. Im not sure if the MB accepts 533 or not, it only states up to 4 gigs 400ddr2 so i'm assuming not. Can I put a stick of 533 in it and have it auto downclock itself to 400?

It should.

Seeing as it's a Dell though, it'll more likely spontaneously combust, blowing up your Dell :D, forcing you to get a real PC ;)

yeah this is the first already made PC i've ever bought... hate to do it but on a budget and Dell really can't be beat as far as $ goes

There's not an internal timing device within the RAM module. The rating just refers to the potential top speed of the components within the module (i.e. the transistors).
