does day quil and the like CURE or just COVER up colds?

A true cold is a caused by a virus, not a bacteria. Antibiotics don't do anything to viruses, which are much smaller than living single-celled organisms like bacteria. A medicine that indiscriminately destroy microbes the size of viruses would kill things that it's not supposed to.

With so many constantly-changing strains, there can be no catch-all vaccine. There's simply no effective "cure" for the cold.
At least until we have nanobots that can be programmed to target specific pathogens. :)




How do you make it past the age of...eight?...without learning that we don't have a cure for the cold. Wow.
Even in Star Trek they didn't have a cure for it. :D

I'm thinking David Shwimmer is the perfect Hollywood version of an officer for portraying weflyhigh.

Factoid: The officer he portrayed (Sobel) in Band of Brothers actually tried to kill himself later in life. He ended up severing his optic nerves and was blind for the rest of his life.
