Wait...HES the whiny one??

Lets look at Luke Skywalker for a moment

"Son, you need to go home and do your work"

"But Me and my friends were gonna go to the Hitachi Station and pick up some Poooower converters.... [VERY whiny voice]

So like father like son :p

Heh.. The first parts of the original Star Wars movie are painful to watch simply because Luke is such a damn pussy to start with. And yes, Hayden is a really bad actor.

Is he a bad actor in other films? I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, simply because he has horrendous dialog to work with in these movies. Ughh..

He's whiny and petulant. Then again, I suppose that could be considered "good" acting, if Lucas wanted him to be exactly that.

Just let the man be beautiful!

He's supposed to sound like he wants to cry, his emotional state is supposed to be all over the place, he's the poster child for bipolar disorder.

Read the novelization of Revenge of the Sith. It's quite good. Only Star Wars book I've ever bought.

I thought he was really good in Ep 2. His whining is part of his journey to the dark side. Seemed to fit in very well

I'm about to become "Dr. Nobody Respects My Opinion", but for the role I think he did an excellent job. He was supposed to seem like a guy who wants nothing but his way, would kick, scream and cry (let alone kill.) to get it, and would be easily confused by emotion. He nailed it. Not only that, but it soooo many scenes of RotS, he bears a striking resemblance to Mark Hamill, which helps bear testament to him being Luke's father.

Say what you will, but I don't think Hayden is the kind of guy who got such a huge part because of who he is or who he knows.

When you guys get back from seeing RotS at 2:30, then tell me he didn't have a good performance. I, however, have already seen it. Sorry, just had to brag.

Unfortunately we see Vader becoming a calm cool collected badass motherfcker by the time Ep4 rolls around. I don't ever remember hearing Vader say "Awwww, open the blast doors! Come on guys!"

The actors they got for Ep1 as a child and Ep2-3 as an adult should have been a calmer more intellectual Anakin. Introspective but with an evil look in their eyes. Vader was simply a no-nonsense badass but Lucas turned him into a crybaby.

Yes, but when you see ep3, you will see that start to come out in him. If you don't like even the slightest hint at spoilers, don't read on (no spoiling of plot that isn't already known, really.) You'll see him give in to the dark side, be torn about which way to go... then breakdown and just flat out accept his fate.

Then we know through antecedent action that he basicaly lives as a ruthless sith lord for about 18 years, growing into an angered soul, giving no mercy. You see the progression in ep3 towards that. Then, at the end of ep6, you see Luke begin to open him to emotion again... enough to kill palpatine and give in to Luke.

right in line with what should happen. ;)

I agree and have posted as much in at least two other SW threads. Hard to keep up with them though ;)

It's freaky how much his hair makes him look luke-y in this ep.

Neither does young Anakin.
Your mind has been tainted by the Ep3 Spoof in the same way that people associated Dana Carvey's character with "George Bush" more closely than the actual president.Despite his petulance when he is allowed the opportunity, he was able to keep his actions in check, even if he let his emotions bleed painfully through.

What is a no-nonsense badass other than someone who wants their way and GETS it. Most of his "whining" in Ep 2 is a result of internal/external conflict. Once he destroys all that conflicts, what is there left to whine about? Also, Something tells me you haven't seen Ep.3 yet :D.

Uhhh, I never saw the Ep3 spoof. What I saw was Ep1 and 2. Anakin accidentally destroying the Trade Federation all the while making stupid comments in a completely unbelievable manner. He didn't even sound like an 8 year old, he sounded like an 8 year old trying to ham it up for Bill Cosby on Kids Say the Darndest Things. "Uh oh R2, I think I started the ship. Uh oh R2, it's on autopilot. Uh oh R2, I should try this button. Uh oh R2, I blew up the ship, that sure is gonna make those people mad." *stupid grin* Here's your pudding pop, now shut the hell up kid.

Then in Ep 2 we see that whiny biznitch actor make stupid comments about how Padme isn't coarse like sand. OK, that's believable. A Queen turned Senator falling in love with a schmuck.

The kid from Sixth Sense or someone with that personality would have been far better suited for young Anakin. Not sure about the adult Anakin, perhaps Hayden would have been OK if it weren't for Lucas's sh1tty dialogue.

And no, I haven't seen Ep3 yet. AFAIK it comes out tonight at 12:01.

Ep 1 sucked pretty bad. I actually didn't even recall it as I was still .. uh .. smoking pretty heavily back then, but your description with the dialogue brought bits of it painfully back :D I still think Christensen did a great job - and has other performances to back his abilities. At the time of viewing, yes some of it was a bit awkward, and the dialogue was pretty poor - but think about the differences between what we would call ""true to life acting" now, v.s. what people only a couple decades ago considered "real". Ep2 got to the heart of emotional awkwardness - even if the language was silly. Just take your "sand" example. Instead of viewing it as George Lucas's total flub at creating a suave character, think of being a teenager yourself (assuming you are past that point), and all the stupid things you said - perhaps even knowing they sounded stupid as they were coming out of your mouth - because you lacked the vocabulary or experience or even mental awareness to say something "better". IMO, the dialogue was not precise, yet it was accurate.

So for creating an awkward teenager, Lucas did well. Unfortunately Anakin was not a normal teenager. He should have been a disciplined student who succumbed to the dark side for various reason. Instead Lucas made him a wreckless young punk.

It's his movie, he can do what he wants. But I was disappointed with where he took it.

They should have cast Rick Moranis, so he could reprise his Dark Helmet schtick from Spaceballs :D

So because he has "the force" he's not human? Much of the appeal of Luke Skywalker was the idea of some everday farmboy saving the universe. Granted Lucas tossed all that to the side with his Midichlorians, but still ..

What possible reason would a disciplined student have for succumbing to the dark side, if they didn't have an underlying flawed character to begin with? Money? Power? Drugs? Sex? A disciplined student wouldn't be dabbling with these in a self-destructive fashion, IMO.

It sounds to me that you wanted Anakin to be a slick, but not quite evil SOB .. actually Ryan Phillipe's character in Cruel Intentions came to mind .. someone like that is self-serving though - and aside from the lack of audience appeal - would be no more loyal to the Sith than the Jedi.
