I just put a super size fan on my new t-bird and it's driving me crazy! The human race sent people to the moon 32 years ago but still can't make a quiet enough fan for a 1.2Ghz processor. Sad sheeet!
I have a hedgehog with a 30ish cfm delta fan. I can definitley hear it. Though it's a whisper compared to that original golden orb I had. That thing was LOUD!
if you want hald decent cooling with little noise. I think the thermaltake Volcano III would be a good choice. It's basically a large heatsink with a slow spinning fan (4400rpm). very little wind noise as well.
if you want it a little cooler, the Coolmaster 6H51 is slightly louder with slightly larger and faster spinning fan (5400rpm).
I have big hands and was trying to reach the fan connector on the mobo and I think I accidentally pressed ontop of the fan a couple times before I removed the PSU to reach the connector. I wonder if I funkled up the bearing by pressed?
Sure do. I've heard of a HSF that hardly makes any noise yet still cools the CPU very nicely. I can't remember the name of it but it had a kind of funnel inlet with the fan inside. Anyone know?
BTW, hold the fan assembly with your hand firmly. It stops making so much noise. Why so?
Is it the Z1-D by power pc and cooling? I saw that one but it's not amd certified. I also already tried to hold it firmly and it wasn't loose or anything.
I've had a 3DCool tornado 1000 case with 2 disks and various fan configurations running in my bedroom for a year and a half or so. The noise blends in once you're used to it, and I swear it helps me sleep now by blending out the other noisiness around me.
I had a similar experience you're having with the Volcano II when I was using mine. It tended to vibrate some which would cause the motherboard to vibrate against the mounting screws. I found that tightening the fan down to the 'sink helped. Also wiggling the sink (slightly, so as not the crack the cpu die) can help settle it down too...
I have the FOP38, one of the loudest fans and it doesn't bother me one bit.
Here is what Anandtech.com had to say about the fan :
<< Because of its 7000rpm fan, the FOP38 is so excessively loud that we would recommend it only for servers that are located in separate rooms where nobody is working. Even when wearing headphones, the noise is still very disturbing. The FOP32-1 is also quite loud, but nowhere near the FOP38. >>
