Don't get a Columbia bike...they're a clothing manufacturer, not a bike company. Any of the following brands' 'urban' or 'city' bikes should be fine:

Trek
Gary Fisher
Giant
Kona

I'm partial to Kona and Giant because their high-level MTBs are unbelievable. However at a price point under $400, pretty much any major brand's bike will serve you well. They're all tough, light and durable.

Those are all good companies. I ride a Gary Fisher Tassajara. Also Ibex and Iron Horse are good bikes. Department store bikes (Columbia, Mongoose, Schwinn, etc.) are okay but can be a hassle and expensive when parts start breaking or you find that the bike was assembled wrong (it happens!!). Even if it's only for urban riding it might be worth looking into one of the bikes listed above. You're going to pay more, but it'll be worth it and if you get it at your local bike shop (LBS) they usually throw in a years worth of tune-ups and maintenance. Visit your LBS and see what they have to offer. :)
