I've done a bit of Google searching but can't seem to find one, although I have seen places to buy a multiplayer version from.

Meh, that's kind of lame. Alpha Centauri was released years before and that came with multiplayer by default.

Yea, it is lame. I think Civ4 is coming with multiplayer right off the bat though. :)

If you pick up coquests, you get multiplayer and the entire first expansion in the box.

The multiplayer in Play the World was badly done, even after being patched it was buggy and universally hated. The Conquests expansion fixed the multiplayer issues pretty much completely.

I never saw much value in multiplayer for Civ3 though. I like a long, drawn out turn-based game, and certainly didn't feel like sitting around while another human takes just as long to make his moves as I do. Simultaneous moves didn't sound so interesting to me either. Play by email would be nice except that I can barely remember what I was doing if I get up to pee, let alone shut down the game and wait for my opponent's move.

Civ4 multiplayer is essentially the same as the final multiplayer in 3, just with some tweaks and new victory conditions.

Civ3 is still a good game to play if your PC isn't going to be up to Civ4's requirements, and if you haven't gotten bored with it. I went and got the Complete Edition (same price as just Conquests even though I already had Civ3 and PtW) a few months ago to tide me over and really got bored with it quickly, just because it felt like I was doing the exact same thing over and over. I'm praying Civ4 will be enjoyable for the months on end that Civ3 was.
