does cingular and AT&T use the same network?

they should join them I assume. it's not the "same" network though as they were both developed with different design methodologies and goals I'm sure. In addition to completely seperate operations.

Yep. Consumer Report just did a multi page article on US cell phone providers. As much as I hate them, it seemed like a decent article.

its because i am still under the old at&t plan, and the reception is not so good. so i was wondering if i upgrade and extend my contract to cingular, will my reception get better.

It depends on where you live. The networks are not completely integrated yet, so your SIM card may be set to prefer cingular blue (AT&T) towers instead of the cingular ones. Also, do you have a phone that supports 850mhz?

When I moved from Blue to Orange I got a newer phone and a newer SIM.
They havent torn down or made any new towers in my area.
Reception and clarity improved.

According to Amazon it does have 850mhz. But that doesn't automaticly mean that the phone will have good reception. Depends on where you are, and on the phone itself
