does case have effect on noise

So right now I have an ams gmono case with plexi side. The thing sounds like a jet engine. I took all but one hard drive out still sounds bad. The hd by itself is fine (samsung 80gb ide), vid card (sapphire 9800se), thermaltake 480w butterfly psu. These all sound quiet by themselves. I get them in the case and the sound is horrible. I am not sure if it is the case or the cpu fan. If it is the case any suggestions for a sub $100 case that will help for sound.

The gmono is an old design with 80mm fans and all the drives are hard mounted w/ screws. Go to the top of the C&C section (i.e. first page of threads list) and enter- Rosewill -into the search field. Take a look at my thread. You'll have a hard time fiding other cases with as much casitude for under $100. much less under $50. The Evercase 42x2 series and the new one (I keep forgetting the model no.) have nearly as good casitude but the resellers almost never order them equipped with the rubber HDD bushings. If you decide to get an Evercase, I have some extra sets of bushings that I sell for less than Evercase does - just PM me.

If at all possible also mount your fans with rubber pins instead of either with screws or plastic cages. sidewindercomputers.com and jab-tech.com (get the black pins from jt - not the white sunbeam ones) are two places you can get them. The fans that come with the 560x series Rosewill are pretty quiet - IDK about the fan that comes wth the R6A series.

I've actually taken out both 80mm fan and the 120mm in the front. Right now the only devices in the case that make any noise when the machine is idle is hdd, psu, cpu, vid card. I checked the, hdd, psu and video and they seem fine by themselves. I am running a amd athlon 2400xp cpu and heatsink is i think an aerocool. I am trying to narrow down my thoughts on what is the major factor for all the noise. I am down to the cpu or just the case in general. I might try one of the rubber silencers on the psu and i could always free mount the single hdd by whipping up a small bungee setup in the case for one hdd.

btw thanks for all the good advice so far guys. It is appreciated.

this is the case i have but black

If you don't have any cooling fans in your case other than the PSU, you may be causeing the PSU to ramp up and that could be making the noise. Many PSUs are pretty quiet at normal speed but make them crank up and they get noisy. You do need at least an exhaust fan other than the PSU and there is a way to put a 120 there (like a reasonably quiet Yate Loon) without cutting.

well the case i have has two spots in the back for 80mm and a spot in the front for a 120mm. I have two thermaltake 80mm's and a 120 silverstone (i think it's silverstone). Just to make sure i'm not nuts. The to 80mm in the back should both be pointing out to allow for exhaust and the 120 in the front should be point in to suck air into the case. I'll put them back in also i will try the idea with the plastic screws and the additional fan in the psu. The psu already has two fans in it. One on the bottom and on on the back. I will try and add an additional to the back

I wasn't suggesting an extra or different fan in the PSU - use the same idea to replace the two 80mm fans in the rear with one 120mm using an 80 to 120mm fan adapter - blank off the extra fan opening.. I did that with that psu as it had a 24/7 full speed fan that was VERY noisy. And cut out those restrictive grills on the back too if you haven't already.

If you'll allow me to digress...

The rear speakers on my rig cost around $6000 (pair) and weigh 200 lbs (each).

They sound GREAT, but why?

The fact of me matter is, the sound of a loudspeaker is determined 10% by the driver and 90% by the enclosure, e.g. a case is all important when it comes to sound!!!

I would suggest the same thing applies to computer cases... 😉

This is a good point -- often understood, but seldom discussed!

In small cases, I think dual 80 exhausts work better than a single 120. However, a 120 is almost always preferable and recommended. Why?

120mm fans are the perfect compromise between performance and sound. At least that's the way it's always been in the past...

The shining star, on the horizon, is the 250mm case fan, et al. They have great promise, IMHO!

An example of this would be the Enermax Chakra BS Case.

Gotta run... BBL

Holy Crap 6 grand. I thought 400 for my klipsch 4 years ago was alot. But i do get your point. I am going to try a couple of the tweaks zepper suggested, but if all else fails it looks like i might have to start shopping around for a new computer case.

Wanna know the funny part?

My front speakers cost $19... no kidding!

I guess I'm an enigma!

Thanks for the help everyone. When i got home i actually put the 2 80mm and the 120mm back in and ramped down the rpm on everything as low as possible. I get a good idle temp on the cpu (athlon xp 2400 at 100 degrees farenheit) and just a low hum now. Now to work on silencing my fricking xbox if it wasn't for xbmc i would got rid of that thing a long time ago.
