Does car type polarize other driver reactions?

😕 Why would you assume that someone driving a hybrid was dealt a shitty hand in life?

I could afford a much more expensive car than the Camry Hybrid XLE I own currently but a) I drive a lot of miles commuting and b) I hate stopping to fill up every few days.

I've got that exact same car. I researched a lot of more expensive cars, but none really added anything really worthy of consideration. The only thing the Camry XLE Hybrid lacks is cooled seats.


It drives well, has enough weight to properly drive through snow/ice, has enough luxury features, and still beats my old Civic's gas mileage.

As for me, I left the "California Commuter" mentality behind when we moved...HOWEVER, if you're driving a Honda...I'm less likely to give you a break in traffic than if you're driving ANY other make of vehicle. (We were in 5 vehicle accidents in California...ALL of them the fault of the other driver...3 of them were Hondas...so, obviously, ALL Honda drivers are morons who should be run off the road and into a ditch.) 😛

I know when I drive one of my sportier cars that everyone else on the road thinks I'm trying to race them even if I just going at or less than the speed limit. I've had grandmas in old beat to hell towncars try to rev their engine at me to get to race from various stops before. Gets really annoying sometimes.

Very little difference driving in a BMW or a Hyundai. Though I've had random people rev up while driving up next to me in the BMW for no reason, like while I'm dropping someone off. WTF. And I treat others by how they drive, not what they drive.

I have learned to ignore the make/model of the vehicle other than deciding which lane to come to a stop in at a red light (some cars simply can't accelerate as fast as others.) You really need to learn to read the body language and posturing of the vehicle. If you pay attention you can usually read little signs and movements a driver makes without realizing it that can give away their intentions to screw you over and react accordingly. Never look at the driver. If they catch your eye you automatically lose 5 points.

What BMW are we talking about? I don't think a non-M 3 or 5 series is going to get you any special attention, they are nice cars but people don't seem to get into the same green eyed frenzy unlike driving something like a M3 or Z4 or similar. All of a sudden nobody wants to let you out at junctions and people actively speed up so you can't change lanes.

Thats my experince anyway.

I assume that everyone else on the road is both blind and malicious until they prove otherwise. So if I need to merge or change lanes, I assume the other person is going to be an asshole about it.

But my attitude is changing. Insurance rates in my state are so high and traffic tickets such a huge revenue source for municipalities, that over time, the really bad drivers have been weeded out. They either get multiyear suspensions which they violate and end up in jail or, more commonly, they just move the fuck out - the IRL version of rage quitting. 'Fuck New Jersey, I never want to see this toxic, superfund shithole again.'

So now the assholes are mainly younger people who still think they're behind the handle bars of their Big Wheel. The problem is that you never know when you're going to run into one of them, either literally or figuratively.

Speaking only for myself, I drive more aggressively around expensive cars and give beaters a wider berth. A guy driving an '82 Ford Escort probably has no insurance and no reason to live, so I don't want to get too close.

It's an X5 (see avatar) and agreed it shouldn't get any "racing" attention so I don't understand the machismo revving next to me while I'm idle in it.

Funny, I was just going to say that when I'm driving my Prius (70 mile each way commute), people pass or tailgate me, even though I usually cruise at 75+. When I'm in my lifted Jeep, I'll be doing 70 and everyone keeps their distance.

When I see someone driving a German car, I have expect them to try and cut me off or do something stupid or rude. I do think of this, and I drive more defensively. You interpret this as being nice. That's probably the reason other drivers react the way they do.

From your post, you sound like the typical ahole German car driver. I sometimes find myself thinking that when you aholes are cutting people off weaving in and out of lanes, that you wrap your car around a guardrail or somehow otherwise crash your car. Of course I would never want innocents to be hurt. Just you. Does this reply answer your question?

People in close proximity with the rest of the human race have less empathy for each other when separated by a few tons of metal. My daily commute includes a seven mile stretch of two lane rural road w/o paved shoulder. When I drove the Brady wagon, people would make stupidly dangerous maneuvers to get around me on the assumption that I would be a slowpoke. It mattered not that there was a line of twenty cars in front of me, people would risk head-on collisions to pass me. It mattered not that the freeway on-ramp was only a half mile ahead and they would gain nothing by passing me. No risk/benefit analysis at all. "It's a wagon, must pass."

And to the latter point, I was agreeing with the OP. But you didn't take the time to read what he said and the context of my reply. You only react to your first impressions, and don't take the time to understand. Mr Know It All. If you did read with comprehension you'd understand that I am saying that too many people do not react differently, and that is what creates a dangerous situation.

People cut off trucks. I see it everyday. Just like they do with cars. The difference is that a car driver, can recover with more ease because of the size and weight of the vehicle. I'm glad that so many truckers are well trained, because otherwise, a lot more of them would killed.
